Sinclair Gas Station
In 1939, after saving every penny he could, Jim Moran put together $360 to purchase a Sinclair gas station that soon became the largest volume outlet in Chicago.

Barn Dance

Partnership with Toyota
On October 26, 1968, JM Family's visionary founder, Jim Moran, signs an agreement in Japan with Toyota Motor Corporation to become the exclusive distributor of Toyotas in the southeastern United States – Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina.

On October 26, 1968, Jim Moran signs the first distributor agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation in Tokyo, Japan, to serve the five Southeastern states — Florida, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and South Carolina. Southeast Toyota Distributors begins with 11 associates in Pompano Beach, Fla., distributing Toyotas to 42 dealerships.
Southeast Toyota revolutionizes the automobile industry with CARNETT, the first computer network to link dealerships with a distributorship; Southeast Toyota Parts department opens to support dealers' needs for high quality and quickly accessible parts; associate profit-sharing plan is established.
JM Pontiac opens its doors in Hollywood, Fla., and becomes the world’s largest Pontiac dealership in 42 days; Southeast Toyota expands distribution to 71 dealerships.
First year Toyota outsells Volkswagen, “the king of imports,” in the southeast; Southeast Toyota establishes Fleet Sales department, becoming the first import distributor to enter the U.S. fleet market.
Jim Moran initiates the “Toyota-Thon” sales event in Southeast Toyota’s five southern states area; the promotion becomes so successful that Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. creates a nationwide Toyotathon program.
Tender Loving Care Corporation established as a provider of extended service contracts for vehicles of all makes; the company grew to become Fidelity Warranty Services, Inc., a JM&A Group company servicing vehicles of all makes.
Company relocates to its current headquarters in Deerfield Beach, Fla.; World Omni Financial Corp. is established and becomes the first captive automotive finance company for an import car maker.
Southeast Toyota expands to 151 dealerships and celebrates the sale of the 1 millionth vehicle; Jim Moran & Associates, Inc. is formed to assist dealerships with recruiting and training finance and insurance managers.
World Omni introduces Commercial Fleet department; World Omni celebrates “Thanks a Billion” when receivables reach the $1 billion mark.
Courtesy Insurance Company, a property and casualty insurance company and division of JM&A Group, is formed to specialize in a variety of commercial risk insurance products for retail automotive dealers.
Fidelity Insurance Agency, Inc., a division of JM&A, begins as an independent agency specializing in insurance products and risk management services for the retail automotive industry.
JM Lexus opens its doors in Margate, Fla., one of the first 100 Lexus dealerships in the country; new vehicle processing center opens in Commerce, Ga., to better serve dealers with North American-built products; Pat Moran named president of Southeast Toyota Distributors; JM Family introduces first Health & Wellness Center for associates and their families.
Two millionth Toyota is sold in the southeast.
World Omni opens Customer Service Center in Mobile, Ala.; JM Family tops South Florida Business Journal’s annual list of top private companies with $2.3 billion in revenue.
JM Lexus receives Elite of Lexus distinction for the first time in honor of the dealership’s high customer service ratings, and ends the year as the largest-volume Lexus dealership in the world; Pat Moran appointed president and CEO of JM Family.
To celebrate Southeast Toyota Distributors’ 25th Anniversary, Mr. Eiji Toyoda, honorary chairman of the board, Toyota Motor Corporation, presents Jim Moran with a plaque commemorating 25 years of dedicated partnership; JM&A Group begins offering finance and insurance products to its 500th dealer customer.
Forbes ranks JM Family No. 28 on list of “America’s Largest Private Companies;” 3 millionth Toyota is sold in the southeast.
Southeast Toyota Finance, a division of World Omni, is founded as a captive finance company providing financial products to dealerships and consumers in the southeast; JM&A Group signs its 1,000th dealer customer.
JM Lexus builds a 4,000 square-foot pre-owned vehicle showroom; World Omni opens St. Louis Customer Service Center; JM&A Group established its Performance Development Center to provide finance and insurance training to dealership professionals.
JM Lexus receives the coveted J.D. Power and Associates Certified Retailer Award, recognizing excellence in customer service and satisfaction, which it has received every year since; Southeast Toyota launches BuyAToyota.com, allowing customers to order, purchase, lease, and virtually “build” and finance vehicles online; JM Family and Southeast Toyota celebrate their 30th anniversary.
JM Family ranks No. 23 on FORTUNE® Magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For” in America, and has made the list every year since; for the first time, Southeast Toyota exceeds more than 200,000 annual retail sales.
Southeast Transportation Systems established to transport vehicles from Southeast Toyota’s processing centers in Jacksonville, Fla., and Commerce, Ga., to dealers throughout the region; CenterOne Financial Services, a division of World Omni, is formed to provide third-party servicing of finance and lease contracts; 4 millionth Toyota sold in the southeast.
To honor Jim Moran’s lifetime of business achievements and community service, the main thoroughfare at JM Family Enterprises is renamed
Jim Moran Boulevard by the City of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; JM Family opens the JM Family Center, its onsite childcare facility for associates’ children, at its corporate headquarters; JM Family ranks No. 15 on Forbes’ list of “America’s Largest Private Companies.”
Jim Moran names Colin Brown CEO of JM Family, the first non-family member to hold the title of president and CEO; Southeast Toyota celebrates the grand opening of its $53 million vehicle processing facility in Jacksonville, Fla.; 5 millionth Toyota is sold in the southeast; JM Family celebrates 35th anniversary; JM Service Center is formed to enhance JM Family’s competitive position by leveraging internal resources to efficiently deliver business solutions across the company; World Omni acquires DataScan Technologies; JM Family ranks No. 14 on FORTUNE’s “100 Best Companies to Work For” list, the company’s highest ranking.

In recognition of his extraordinary impact as an automotive pioneer, Jim Moran receives the highest honor in the international motor vehicle industry with his induction into the Automotive Hall of Fame in Dearborn, Mich.; Southeast Toyota tops more than $30 million in monthly parts sales for the first time ever.
JM Family ranks No. 9 on the InformationWeek 500 list of leading technology innovators, its fifth consecutive year on the list and second year in the top 10; JM Lexus celebrates the official grand opening of its new, state-of-the-art showroom and service facilities; 6 millionth Toyota is sold in the southeast; DataScan Field Services expands into Canada, partnering with lender clients to provide floorplan inventory verification services for more than 3,000 Canadian dealerships.
Founder Jim Moran passes away on April 24 at the age of 88 in Hillsboro Beach, Fla. In tribute to Jim Moran, JM Family establishes Founder’s Day, an annual company-wide celebration on his birthday, August 8. In a message to associates, Colin Brown said, “This historic day gives each of us a special opportunity to take time to remember and honor him and his legacy — a legacy of countless acts of compassion and generosity and of innovation and visionary leadership in the automotive industry that resulted in the founding of an amazing company.”
JM Family celebrates 40th anniversary; the company ranks No. 23 on FORTUNE® Magazine's annual list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” its 10th consecutive year on the list; Southeast Toyota’s Fleet department sells 1 millionth vehicle; WARD’s Dealer 500 lists JM Lexus as the nation’s fourth-largest dealership.
JM Family publishes its five-year Environmental Action Plan to guide efforts toward becoming an environmentally sustainable organization; Broward County honors JM Lexus with an Emerald Award, recognizing the dealership’s commitment to environmentally conscious business practices.
First annual Environmental Report published, recapping the company’s environmental accomplishments in 2009 and outlining plans to further strengthen sustainability initiatives in the future.
World Omni celebrates its 30th anniversary; Computerworld includes JM Family among its list of top 12 Green-IT Innovators; eighth onsite Health & Wellness Center opens in Alpharetta, Ga.
