Southeast Transportation Systems Receives U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award

Award Recipients are Top Environmental Performers and Leaders for Freight Supply Chain Efficiency

Southeast Transportation Systems (STS), a division of Southeast Toyota Distributors, was honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a true industry leader in freight supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency.

STS was established during July 2000 to better serve the 177 Toyota dealers in the southeast region of Florida, Georgia, Alabama and North and South Carolina. The company distributed 181,093 Toyota vehicles in 2017 to those dealerships from its Jacksonville, Fla., and Commerce, Ga., vehicle processing centers.

STS operates 102 trucks equipped with cutting-edge equipment, which is routinely inspected to minimize emissions. Ninety percent of vehicles in the company’s fleet are new and have improved fuel economy, employing systems like automatic transmission and electric power take-off. These tools monitor the trucks to decrease idle time and reduce the discharge of pollutants.

Additionally, STS facilitates a driver training program to teach the operators vehicles techniques to optimize fuel efficiency. In the past five years of implementing the new fuel-saving initiatives, STS has saved more than 1,500,000 gallons of diesel and $5.2 million in fuel costs.

“Being a conscientious environmental partner is an important part of our corporate philosophy at Southeast Transportation Systems,” said Kevin Fleeger, group vice president, Southeast Toyota Distributors. “We continuously look for innovative ways to reduce our carbon footprint and appreciate being acknowledged by the EPA for these efforts.”

STS was one of 40 truck carriers to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers of SmartWay’s 3,700 Partners. The Excellence Awardees were honored at the 2018 American Trucking Associations Annual Management Conference & Exhibition in Austin, Texas on October 29, 2018.

“The EPA is honoring top-performing SmartWay Carrier Partners with this year’s 2018 SmartWay Excellence Award, for their leadership in moving more goods with less fuel,” said EPA’s assistant administrator of the Office of Air and Radiation, Bill Wehrum. “These companies inspire others in the freight sector to invest in innovative technologies and business practices that save fuel, while reducing costs and protecting the environment.”
